Measuring device innovations for power electronics developers

Tek TICP100 MSO68B Switching Measurement GaN

The new probes in the TICP IsoVu series from Tektronix work with HF insulation and therefore offer high precision and safety when measuring rapidly changing currents. These and other innovations from the measuring device manufacturer are designed to accelerate the development of power electronics for both low and high voltage systems.

Tektronix innovations include the EA-PSB 20000 Triple Series, a three-channel, bi-directional power supply and electronic load with energy recovery that provides increased test coverage, density and capacitance across multiple channels in a single device. The RF-isolated probes are the industry's first shunt-based current probes of their kind and ensure complete galvanic isolation between measurement systems and the components under test. Compared to probes on the market or alternative shunt measurement methods, they improve high-bandwidth, low-noise current measurements in high-voltage applications. With these probes, which are available with bandwidths of up to 1 GHz, engineers can capture precise measurements of rapidly changing currents on oscilloscopes over a wide voltage range in nanoseconds - from μA to kA.

The wide measurement range covers previously inaccessible high-voltage environments - from fast-switching SiC and GaN power converters to low-power applications such as battery performance testing in mobile devices - all with a single probe, says Daryl Ellis, general manager for the entry-level and standard portfolio at Tektronix. The measurement device manufacturer is thus providing support to meet the increasing global pressure to innovate in the field of power electronics through faster and more precise development.

The features in brief:

  • Complete galvanic RF isolation, eliminates ground loops
  • More than 30 times higher common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) than conventional differential probes: 140 dB CMRR at DC, up to 90 dB at 1 MHz
  • Ultra-low noise - in a 1X configuration, the 50 Ω input offers ultra-low noise of <4.7 nV / √Hz (<150 μV at 1 GHz)
  • Available in three models with bandwidths of 1 GHz (TICP100), 500 MHz (TICP050) and 250 MHz (TICP025)
  • Utilizes the TekVPI probe interface for integration with Tektronix Series 4, 5 and 6 MSO oscilloscopes

Revolutionizing programmable current

The EA-PSB 20000 Triple Series three-channel, bi-directional DC power supply is capable of high power density parallel testing of components in complex systems. Each of the three independent channels can deliver up to 10 kW of power and supports a voltage range of up to 920 V and currents of up to 340 A. The series allows customers to consolidate multiple test setups into one, reducing costs, equipment requirements and test time. The devices also feature automatic voltage or current adjustment to deliver full power over a wide operating range, allowing a single device to provide different voltage and current combinations.

The features in brief:

  • Three independent, fully isolated bi-directional DC channels
  • Functions as an electronic DC load for energy recycling, up to 96% energy recovery
  • Supports up to 30 kW total power, voltages from 0-60 V up to 0-920 V and currents from 0-40 A up to 0-340 A per channel
  • Parallel testing with galvanically isolated communication bus
  • High-speed CAN FD communication interface
  • Reduces rack space requirements by 50% compared to single output devices

With its comparatively higher power density and test capacity, the compact device is also a tool for engineers who need to quickly adapt to different test requirements to accelerate innovation in fast-moving sectors such as automotive and renewable energy, said James Hitchcock, EA Electro-Automatic vice president and general manager.

The new probes were launched at electronica in November and are now available to order and shipping immediately. The new triple power supply can be pre-ordered and will be delivered from January 2025.
