Everlight Electronics, a leading manufacturer of optoelectronic components from Taiwan, is currently focusing on UV technology in the field of air purification and the disinfection and sterilization of standing and flowing water. Its new ELUC3535NUB series of UVC LEDs uses epitaxial flip chips on a sapphire substrate for high-quality sterilization.
Industrial applications of short-wave and high-energy UV radiation are based on chemical reactions and material changes. Examples are Vulcanization, curing of plastics, lacquers and paints, photocatalysts and black light lamps for document inspection. Everlight has been investing in the development of UVA and UVC products for years. In the UVA spectrum (black light with a wavelength of 315 to 400 nm), there are already the 2016, 3535 and 4545 LED series, and in the wavelength range from 360 to 410 nm there are versions with different outputs and different beam angles according to customer requirements.
The new 280 nm version in a package made of inorganic quartz glass covers three intensity levels (2, 10 and 30 mW) and is therefore suitable for medical technology applications, water and air purification and the sterilization of surfaces with germs, viruses or mould. Another application is air conditioning systems or 'smart' toilets, in which the UVC LED has an antibacterial effect. The same effect can also be achieved with the UVA3535 (1.8 W, 120°) in combination with titanium dioxide coating (TiO2) of the air filters.
