The 'German Innovation Award' was presented for the eleventh time on April 3, 2020. This year it went to Varta. Accenture, EnBW and WirtschaftsWoche have joined forces in the 'German Innovation Award' initiative to recognize outstanding, forward-looking innovations from German companies that are changing business and markets with their innovative strength. Varta impressed the jury with a new technology for increasing the energy density of lithium-ion batteries. This was achieved by using and optimizing new materials with a higher storage capacity. In a first step, the energy density was increased by 25 %. The battery is a strategic component for manufacturers of cordless headsets, for example. A high energy density enables longer running times or additional functions in the headsets. Nine companies were nominated for the German Innovation Award this year. The ten-member jury, made up of personalities from research and entrepreneurship, selected the most forward-looking innovations. In addition to product innovations, innovative business models, processes and services as well as organizational and marketing innovations were also considered.
