Flat, flexible and powerful: Varta researches printed batteries of various electrochemical systems
Varta is also involved in research projects in the field of printed electronics - specifically printed batteries. The aim is to optimize existing applications and develop new ones. The battery manufacturer is researching the various electrochemical systems and cooperating as a partner with universities and other scientific institutions.
The BEWELL project, which has been running since the beginning of 2019, aims to unlock the potential of flexible and portable electronics through technology components manufactured in Europe. Integration and manufacturing technologies are being developed that are required for wearing smart skin patches and wrist devices - smart watches and bracelets.
Another research project is the OxiFlexIt project. Its aim is to develop a mobile monitoring system for arteriosclerotic vascular diseases. The focus is on the three-dimensional real-time display of oxygen saturation in the analyzed areas of the body. The measuring system consists of one or more reusable measuring modules, a patch that carries the system's battery and antenna, and an app for communication and data management. The monitoring system is intended for use during or after a procedure or operation and during rehabilitation. OxiFlexIt is also set to develop new fields of application. It is conceivable that marathon runners will be able to keep an eye on their oxygen saturation during the competition and thus avoid overloading.
Lithium-ion button cells from the CoinPower series are powerful and safe microbatteries. With their stable design, the cells are suitable as a power source for wearables and hearables. The battery manufacturer has now increased their energy density by around 30 %. The energy density is important for the new generations of headsets with ever longer runtimes.
A typical battery for headsets with a diameter of 14 mm (CP1454) can now achieve almost 100 mAh instead of the previous 85. Improvements in electrochemistry, more precise production technology and optimization of the cells should enable 110 mAh to be achieved with this type of battery in the second half of the year.
