This book lays the foundations for teaching any interested engineer about the important properties of metals, plastics and ceramics. These properties include how materials behave under mechanical stress and the resulting changes in the materials: deformation, fatigue and, under more extreme stress, fracture.

Another important change in materials results from exposure to thermal energy, and the resulting changes in various materials are discussed in later chapters. Electrical properties round off the discussion.

The material in the book is presented in such a way that all the necessary basics, from atomic structure and crystallisation to macroscopic properties, are explained without going into too much depth.

A particular focus of the content is the comparison of material properties. To this end, a large number of measurement curves and tables with values are included. Of particular interest is the change in material properties with a change in composition. However, modern materials are also becoming increasingly efficient through the addition of fibres. For this reason, special attention is paid to fibre composites in metals, ceramics and polymers.
