Today's use of electricity as a form of energy is based on the research findings and inventions of two scientists, Galvani and Volta.

Their discoveries in the 18th century ushered in the age of electrical energy, which, with its many possible applications, had a decisive influence on civilisation.

Until 1938, all scientific work assumed that the battery was invented by Volta in 1800.

However, the discovery of a small vessel near Baghdad in 1938 suggested that Volta was not the inventor of the battery, but that he had rediscovered it through his work.

The vessel, which was found together with several other strange objects, was first described by Wilhelm König in 1938.
He also made the bold assumption that the find could be a type of galvanic cell. Since this discovery, scientists around the world have conducted extensive research to confirm or refute König's idea.

This book tells the story of König's discovery and evaluates how supporters and opponents have expressed their views on his idea, both verbally and in writing.
