Information
Cables and wires of various designs and complexity are used in all electronics industries, employing a wide range of technologies. In today's electronic systems, electrical cables and wires are complex components in many applications, subject to various electrical, thermomechanical and environmental requirements. Some of these requirements are very complex and demanding. On the one hand, this is due to rapid advances in semiconductor technology and the demand for ever greater levels of integration. On the other hand, the need to limit and reduce costs in electronic systems is a strong driver for current developments in the cable industry.
The book covers a wide range of different topics in the field of electrical cables and wires. The basic design components of electrical cables as well as the metallic materials and plastics used in cable construction are discussed in detail.
Electrical cables are used to transmit electrical power and electrical signals. An important focus is therefore on the electrical requirements and properties of cable arrangements. In particular, aspects of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), such as shielding, shielding connections and earthing, are discussed in detail. In addition, the electrical interfaces used today for the transmission of digital signals are also covered.
In addition to dealing with electrical properties, there are also chapters on mechanical and thermal stresses and requirements.
Electrical cables must be connected to other electronic components via connection components. There are a variety of different contact technologies for this purpose, which are also described in detail. Further chapters describe the manufacture, qualification and various norms and standards in the field of electrical cables.
Today, there is an overwhelming variety of different cable types and cable designations. The book lists the most important cable types and their properties and shows a classification of electrical cables according to different aspects.
The aim of this book is to provide users, i.e. developers of electronic systems, cable manufacturers and designers, as well as employees in sales, marketing and commercial areas, with a well-founded overview of the various aspects of the use and manufacture of electrical cables and wires. The various topics are described in such a way that even laymen can easily and quickly understand them. For further study, all chapters contain a large number of references to additional literature. The book is also intended to serve as a reference work for quickly finding important terms related to electrical cables and wires.
