Soldering is a material bond between materials of different compositions but with the same type of chemical bond. The process can be used with a large number of different materials and over a wide range of temperatures. In electronics and electrical engineering in particular, the lowest working temperatures for soldering are well below 200 °C and can extend to over 1000 °C for machine components or vehicles.

The authors have compiled all their knowledge on soldered joints in alphabetical order with numerous cross-references in the form of short definitions, explanations and comments, supplemented by images and tables. In doing so, they have laid the foundation for the development of a common language and procedural rules for the manufacture of material joints.
