The reader is familiarised with all metallurgical conditions and processes relevant to the reliability of fusion solder joints and the cost-effectiveness of soldering production, with a focus on production metallurgy. This opens up opportunities for innovative developments in the field of manufacturing alternative solder materials and fusion solder joints.

Contents:

  • Processes for soldering with temporary liquid solder
  • Metallurgical processes and conditions during heating to soldering temperature
  • Metallurgical processes and conditions when holding at soldering temperature
  • Metallurgical processes and conditions when cooling from soldering temperature
  • Metallurgical processes and conditions during fusion soldering with special soldering processes

Target audience:

  • Experts in the development, application and quality assurance of brazing in industry
  • Teachers and students, participants in training and further education events in the field of welding and brazing technology, as well as manufacturing technology and materials science

The authors:

Prof. Dr. sc. techn. Klaus Wittke, born in 1934, studied welding technology and obtained his doctorate at MSTU Moscow. He then worked at the Otto von Guericke University of Technology in Magdeburg and habilitated at the University of Togliatti. From 1986, he headed the scientific department of joining technology and assembly at the Technical University of Chemnitz. From 1993 to 1999, he conducted research in the field of soldering technology at the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM) in Berlin.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Wolfgang Scheel, born in 1941, studied mechanical engineering at Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg. He was appointed university lecturer in 1973 and full professor of electrical engineering at Humboldt University in Berlin in 1979. In 1992, he took over as head of the Centre for Connection Technology in Electronics (ZVE) at SLV Hannover in Oberpfaffenhofen, which became affiliated with the Fraunhofer Society in 1994 and belongs to IZM Berlin. Until 2007, he also served as head of the Assembly Technology and Connection Techniques department at IZM Berlin.
