German Refrigeration Award 2018: Climate-friendly refrigeration technology wins

Refrigeration and air conditioning systems in Germany are responsible for as many CO2 emissions as around 30% of road traffic: 50 million tons of CO2 per year. The savings potential of the more than 120 million systems is correspondingly high. In order to promote climate-friendly developments, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) is awarding the German Refrigeration Prize 2018 as part of the National Climate Initiative. The award is aimed at companies and individuals who develop and implement innovative solutions for refrigeration technology.
The Refrigeration Prize is endowed with 52,500 euros and will be awarded for the sixth time in 2018. Applications must be submitted by January 31, 2018 at www.klimaschutz.de/kaeltepreis. Efficient and economical refrigeration technology not only benefits the climate and the environment, but above all the companies themselves: Up to 35% energy savings and correspondingly lower costs are possible through the use of efficient components and systems. In some companies, energy savings of up to 75% have even been achieved. Applications for the Refrigeration Award are possible in three categories:
1. refrigeration or air conditioning innovations
2. energy-efficient refrigeration and air conditioning systems with indirect cooling
3. intelligent monitoring of refrigeration and air conditioning systems
The Federal Ministry for the Environment awards 10,000, 5,000 and 2,500 euros per category. The prize money is to be invested in climate protection projects so that further greenhouse gas emissions can be avoided.
