Once again this year, German student teams, all finalists in the VDE/BMBF Cosima 2017 competition, won the world championship title in microsystems technology. With their inventions, the students from Karlsruhe and Freiburg each took one of the first and one of the second places at the international microsystems technology competition iCan in Hong Kong. A total of 23 student teams from China, Japan, Thailand, France, Taiwan, Egypt, Australia, Germany and Switzerland took part. The competition is a Chinese initiative that was organized for the ninth time.
First prize went to the 'Heat it' team from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT. It impressed the judges with the development of a compact and intelligent smartphone extension - the sting healer - for healing insect bites and herpes blisters using heat. The 'sting healer' is small and intelligent, and does not require any batteries when connected to a smartphone.
Second place went to the 'Smart Faraday' team from the University of Freiburg. It developed an energy-autonomous, intelligent bicycle pedal for recording various parameters on a smartphone.
This year, students once again have the opportunity to take part in Cosima and qualify for iCan 2019 in Berlin (www.cosima-mems.de).
