Improve energy-related performance

ISO 50001:2018 "Energy management systems - Requirements with guidance for use" was published in August 2018. Although the transition phase does not end until 20.8.2021, initial, repeat and recertification audits have been carried out exclusively in accordance with the new standard since 21.2.2020.

The manufacturing industry and energy-intensive companies benefit from a certified energy management system, which is also a prerequisite for applying for a reduction in accordance with §§ 40f EEG. Existing systems must be converted. The focus is on improving energy-related performance (ebL), and the DIN Standards Committee on the Fundamentals of Environmental Protection provides useful practical tips.

The central objective of energy management systems (EnMS) in accordance with ISO 50001:2018 is to improve energy-related performance. As proof of this continuous improvement, the energy baseline (EnB) and the current EnPI value must be determined, normalized if necessary, compared and summarized at regular intervals for all energy performance indicators (EnPIs).

The DIN Standards Committee on the Principles of Environmental Protection (NAGUS) now provides useful information for implementation in practice. The 20 FAQs were published in January 2020 and specify how companies can determine and present the improvement of the ebL.
