DIN 51385 "Lubricants - Machining media for the forming and machining of materials" defines terms for lubricants used for lubrication or cooling during machining and forming. In addition to this standard, VDI 3397 Sheet 1 contains the new precise descriptions of the composition, application and properties of various machining media. The media are classified according to their main area of application. Possible are Machining, forming, minimum quantity lubrication and multifunctional oils. The use depends on the requirement profile. This means that the appropriate machining media are used in different processes.
Based on the specifications listed in VDI 3397 Sheet 1, the decision for the appropriate machining medium must be made in such a way that an economically and ecologically optimal result is achieved. The requirements in the guideline have been developed on the basis of the statutory regulations on occupational health and safety and environmental protection.
The guideline VDI 3397 Sheet 1 "Machining media (BM) for forming and machining - cooling lubricants, forming lubricants, minimum quantity lubricants, multifunctional oils" is published by the VDI Society for Production and Logistics (GPL). The guideline was published as a white print in March 2020 and replaces the August 2018 edition.
