The RTS (reflow thermal switch) thermal fuse with shunt from Schurter acts as an additional element in the safety chain of fuses. At 6.6 x 8.8 mm, RTS combines three functions in one SMD component: overtemperature and overcurrent protection as well as current measurement. This enables a cost-effective increase in safety in automotive applications and in professional environments.
In compact electronic products, there is a risk of overheating (thermal runaway) due to heat-producing and self-reinforcing processes. This can lead to the destruction of a component or the product. RTS is placed as close as possible to the component to be protected and disconnects it from the circuit if a certain threshold value of the ambient temperature of the power semiconductor is exceeded. The level of the current flowing through can be measured and corrected by adding a shunt measuring resistor.
RTS processes operating currents of 130 A and rated DC voltages of 60 V. The standard version has a measuring sensor resistance of 500 μΩ and a trigger temperature of 210 °C. RTS with shunt is suitable for 12 V and 48 V applications in automotive power electronics: Cooling fans, ABS, power steering, PTC heating, HVAC, glow plugs and diesel radiators. In industrial environments, it is suitable for battery protection, power supply units, lighting of ballasts, H-bridges and motor drives. The standard versions also meet customer-specific requirements with adapted parameters, such as the tripping temperature.
