4D radar as a sensor module for self-driving cars

Cubtek Inc, a manufacturer of 77 GHz millimeter-wave radars for automobiles, presents a new 4D imaging radar platform with NXP Semiconductors, a supplier of automotive radar chips. In developing the 4D imaging radar for RF measurements in the E-band, Cubtek selected Rohde & Schwarz's ZVA40 network analyzer and ZVA-Z90 millimeter wave converter as measurement equipment in research and development. These devices offer high performance and accurate measurement results in sensitive environments.

For self-driving vehicles, the 4D imaging radar operating in the 77 GHz band is of crucial importance as a sensor module. Compared to LiDAR, 4D imaging radar is less sensitive to weather conditions and better meets safety requirements. The 4D imaging radar achieves an angular resolution of almost 1 degree with an angular accuracy of 0.1 degree. Conventional radar systems are usually based on three transmitting and four receiving antennas. The 4D imaging radar offers considerably more antenna channels and achieves a multiple transceiver volume. Since 4D imaging radars require more 77 GHz millimeter wave antennas and transceiver integrations, their millimeter wave antennas, IC adapter design and test validations play an important role.

The NXP imaging radar chipset consists of the S32R45 radar processor and the high performance second generation TEF82XX RFCMOS radar transceiver. It supports twelve transmit and 16 receive antennas for 77 GHz, which can be expanded to 192 virtual antenna arrays using MIMO technology. Optimization of the high-resolution algorithms can achieve an angular resolution of less than 1 degree, further improving the performance of the 4D imaging radar.

Rohde & Schwarz digital oscilloscopes range from the portable RTH series to the mid-range MXO4 oscilloscopes and the high-end RTO6 and RTP series. The latter can analyze the demodulation bandwidth of FMCW signals. Rohde & Schwarz is a pioneer in the fields of test and measurement, networks and cybersecurity with customers from industry and the government sector worldwide.
