Untether AI announces that it has joined the Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express (UCIe) consortium. The industry organization has developed an open definition for interconnect between chiplets within a package. Untether AI, which develops in the area of energy-centric A.I. acceleration, sees die-to-die interconnect as a logical step for energy-centric compute architectures.
Compute workloads have changed radically in recent years with the emergence of A.I. workloads. The increasing complexity of A.I. and conventional software algorithms has increased the demand for heterogeneous computing with domain-specific architectures. Organizations are increasingly using a combination of A.I. accelerators, CPUs, GPUs, memory and networking technologies to create the most efficient hardware architectures for their workloads. This can pose significant challenges in terms of energy consumption and data transportation as the size of neural network models explodes and I/O power requirements continue to increase.
Energy-efficient chiplets for A.I. acceleration
UCIe aims to solve these problems through a universal standard for die-to-die connections. They enable energy-efficient and seamless communication between different components. The latest release of the UCIe 1.1 specification extends support to automotive applications, such as autonomous vehicles.
Chiplets of different sizes can be tailored to specific application requirements
Untether AI's vision of plug-and-play chiplets aims to enable the development of compact and high-performance computing systems in a range of areas, from high-performance computing to edge applications. The company's speedAI devices feature an at-memory compute architecture that seamlessly supports chiplet methods due to its spatial scalability and I/O ring NOC (Network on Chip). Chiplets of different sizes can be tailored to specific application requirements.
Dr. Debendra Das Sharma, Chairman of UCIe, welcomed the company's participation in the consortium: "By leveraging chiplet technology and universal UCIe standards, Untether AI will bring energy-efficient chiplets for A.I. acceleration to the market. We are already seeing great adoption of UCIe by our customers."
