Dramatic appeal for the development of artificial intelligence

In an open letter published by the independent, non-profit Future of Life Institute (FLI), well-known scientists and major players from the technology industry call on all AI laboratories to immediately pause the development of even more powerful AI systems for at least six months.

No AI models that are more powerful than GPT-4 should be trained during this period. The signatories are calling for the international community to intervene if the industry does not comply. According to the signatories, AI laboratories and independent experts should use the time to develop and implement universal safety protocols for artificial intelligence that are reviewed and monitored by independent external experts.

The authors believe it is essential that the entire AI sector works together with the legislature and develops regulatory systems, compliance with which is then also monitored. Otherwise, the authors of the letter fear that uncontrolled AI would have a dramatic impact on society as a whole, e.g. machines flooding our information channels with propaganda and falsehoods.

The signatories include AI experts from globally recognized universities and research institutions. From the commercial sector, experts from Google's AI subsidiary Deepmind, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Tesla CEO Elon Musk are among those who have signed.
