Groundbreaking ceremony for institute building near Munich

The Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS focuses on safe artificial intelligence and the resilience of autonomous intelligent systems. The researchers are now receiving a new institute building on the Fraunhofer campus in Garching near Munich.

The ground-breaking ceremony on October 9 with Bavaria's Minister President Dr. Markus Söder and Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger marks the official start of construction and marks the beginning of an international center for safe intelligence research.

The Garching research campus is home to a unique concentration of research facilities at European level. The immediate proximity to the Technical University of Munich, neighboring Fraunhofer Institutes and other scientific and industrial partners facilitates a wide range of collaborations.

The new building provides the rapidly growing institute with the necessary structural framework and flexible working conditions for agile project groups and confidential customer collaborations: In the Collaboration Labs, employees of the partners and the institute will work together on innovative solutions. These solutions can be demonstrated and tested in concrete use cases in the large Living Lab. Conference areas will be available for professional exchange at conferences and workshops. In future, internal research and development work will take place on the upper floors.

The total floor space of 5,230 m2 is spread over four floors and offers space for 259 employees. After the planned completion at the end of 2024, 180 employees will move into the new premises. The costs for construction and initial equipment are estimated at €41.6 million and will be covered 50/50 by the Free State of Bavaria and the federal government.
