Highly integrated PMIC performs complete power management

Renesas introduces the RAA215300 PMIC (Power Management IC). The device is an optimized complement to the RZ/V2L and RZ/G2L microprocessors designed for AI-powered applications.

The new high-performance PMIC offers a wide range of functions, including nine channels, an integrated load module and a real-time clock. The high level of integration reduces design complexity, increases system reliability and shortens time to market. RAA215300 contains six buck regulators, three LDO (low drop out) regulators and a charging module for coin cells/supercaps. It supports DDR4, DDR4L, DDR3 and DDR3L memory with dedicated VREF, VTT and VPP rails. The new PMIC enables cost-saving four-layer PCBs. It supports ambient temperatures from -40 to 105 °C for industrial applications.

The RAA215300 can be combined with the RZ/G2L, RZ/V2L and other Renesas products to develop a scalable SMARC (Smart Mobility Architecture) SoM (System on Module) with AI design. In addition to the Renesas MPU and PMIC, this also includes power controllers, a USB PD controller and a clock generator. "Users of our RZ/V2L and RZ/G2L MPUs will benefit from the performance advantages and simple design of the RAA215300," explains Andrew Cowell, Vice President of the Mobility, Infrastructure and IoT Power Business Division at Renesas. "In addition, its high integration capability and feature set make it an excellent choice for consumer, industrial and SoM applications." The device supports single-cell lithium-ion battery applications and improves the efficiency of systems with a VTT buck regulator instead of an LDO. It is fully configurable with built-in EEPROM. The spread spectrum mode reduces EMI effects in RF applications.
