New competence center for AIoT solutions planned

The Japanese semiconductor group Renesas intends to acquire the company Reality AI. Reneas intends to merge with the provider of embedded AI and tiny machine learning solutions for non-visual sensor technology in vehicles, industrial and consumer products by the end of 2022, thereby significantly expanding its capabilities in the field of endpoint AI.

This should provide system developers with more flexibility and efficiency to prepare their products for Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) and bring them to market faster. By acquiring Reality AI's highly skilled workforce, Renesas aims to create an AIoT center of excellence in Maryland.

Industrial IoT (IIoT), consumer, automotive and other embedded applications require machine learning-based intelligent decisions that are physically closer to the data source. This requires low latency and high security. In collaboration with its partners, Renesas offers development environments and software that enable the implementation of AI in its highly secure low-power MCUs (microcontrollers) and MPUs (microprocessors).

The acquisition of Reality AI enables Renesas to expand its in-house capabilities to provide comprehensive and highly optimized endpoint solutions in terms of both hardware and software. With them, system developers can realize endpoint intelligence in a wide range of IIoT, consumer and automotive applications. Reality AI's embedded AI and TinML solutions provide machine learning with advanced signal processing mathematics, delivering fast, efficient machine learning inference that fits on the smallest MCUs. The core product of the Columbia, Maryland-based company is Reality AI Tools - a software environment that supports the entire product development lifecycle and enables analysis of non-visual sensor data.
