With a sales volume of USD 14.1 billion and a market share of 19%, US manufacturer Texas Instruments (TI) defended its position as the world's leading supplier of analog ICs in 2021. Compared to 2020
TI's analog IC sales increased by almost $3.2 billion or 29%. This is according to the McClean Report Update published in May by US market analyst IC Insights. Analog IC sales account for 86% of TI's $16.3 billion in IC sales and 81% of its total semiconductor sales of $17.3 billion.
The top ten analog IC vendors accounted for 68% market share in 2021. This includes general purpose analog components, mixed-signal devices and application-specific ICs, provided they contain at least 50% analog circuits.
they contain at least 50% analog circuits. This corresponds to the definition of the WSTS (World Semiconductor Trade Statistics). There were no changes in the ranking of analog IC suppliers in 2021. Six of the top ten
reside in the USA. Three are from Europe and one is Japanese. Together, they generated $50.4 billion in analog IC sales last year. The number two in the ranking, Analog Devices (ADI), achieved sales growth of 21% to $9.4 billion in 2021 following the acquisition of competitor Maxim Integrated, corresponding to a market share of 13%. ADI had already acquired analog pioneer Linear Technologies in 2017.
In third place with USD 5.9 billion is Skyworks Solutions, with the biggest jump in turnover of all providers last year. Skyworks focuses on front-end modules and power amplifiers for smartphones, highly integrated SiP and SoC devices for mobile infrastructure, power management, WiFi connectivity and smart energy ICs for ZigBee and Bluetooth. Largest customer in 2021 was Apple Computer with 59% of total sales. In July 2021, Skyworks acquired the infrastructure and automotive business of Silicon Laboratories for $2.75 billion to expand into the electric vehicle segment, industrial controls for 5G infrastructure, optical data communications and other applications. All three major European suppliers - Infineon, STM and NXP - were among the top ten in 2021. Together, they achieved a global market share of 16%. The fourth-placed supplier Infineon achieved a sales volume of $4.8 billion. Analog ICs remain a critical factor in digitally oriented electronic systems. Characteristic of the analog IC market is its lower fluctuation margin over time. However, this was not the case in 2021 - with market growth of 30%, compared to 26% growth in the overall IC market.
