In a construction period of 18 months, the H+ Carré shopping center including a triple sports hall was built on the "Alte Hütte" site in Herdorf, Rhineland-Palatinate. For the latter, Fielitz-Leichtbauelemente, a specialist in 3D metal structures, designed and produced three-dimensional panels made of perforated aluminum sheets from SCHÄFER Perforated Metal. At the request of the town of Herdorf, the 3D façade with the type designation "Water Wave Herdorf" is coated with baked-on wet paint in sand gold matt. The result is a dynamic, durable and low-maintenance design façade.
The new triple sports hall for the town of Herdorf has a usable area of 2,200 square meters. For the striking 3D façade of the sports hall, 1,800 square meters of perforated aluminium sheet with a thickness of three millimetres were supplied by SCHÄFER Perforated Metal. Thanks to the variety of perforation patterns and the mechanical 3D formability, this material can be used to meet highly individual style requirements.
"The 'Herdorf water wave' is made up of two different wave shapes that merge into one another. To achieve this, we deep-drawn and formed the perforated sheets three-dimensionally at a pressure of 1,400 bar in our globally unique fluid press with a working range of two to four meters. The prerequisite for this is a stringent tolerance accuracy of the perforated sheets with a consistently high quality standard," explains Oliver Fielitz, Managing Director of Fielitz GmbH Leichtbauelemente.
The structural properties and low weight of the perforated sheet material enable a lightweight façade construction that permanently protects the building from the effects of the weather. Thanks to the high strength of the perforated aluminum sheets, the façade can also withstand extreme wind loads. The baked-on coating with special wet paint for buildings from Duraflon® rounds off the client's design requirements.
The façade structure of the sports hall creates a changing play of light shadows - similar to a water wave, but with a sand gold matt sheen - influenced by the rhythm of the stars and outdoor lighting.
"In conjunction with the 3D shaping and the coated surface of the perforated sheets, an aesthetic is created which is due to the plasticity of the material," says Alexander Tumasjan, Head of Sales at SCHÄFER Perforated Sheets.
