Heat exchanger made from fossil-free steel

Heat exchanger made from fossil-free steel

Steel production causes 7% of globalCO2 emissions. In 2022, electroplating supplier Alfa Laval from Lund in Sweden therefore started a cooperation with steel producer SSAB to offer the first heat exchanger made from fossil-free steel.

Another milestone has now been reached on the road to a global carbon-neutral supply chain: Alfa Laval uses recycled steel from SSAB in its heat exchangers, which are produced without the use of fossil fuels. The steel, called SSAB Zero, is made from 100% recycled steel and is produced using fossil-free electricity and biogas. The result is a material that produces essentially zero carbon emissions from fossil fuels.

Alfa Laval will initially deliver more than 100 heat exchangers made with SSAB Zero steel in 2023 and will significantly increase this quantity over the next few years. The heat exchangers will then be used in numerous sectors such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), marine, process industry and food processing, where they optimize energy efficiency and reduce global emissions

SSAB is a Nordic and US steel producer with a presence in over 50 countries and production facilities in Sweden, Finland and the USA.

Alfa Laval employs 20,300 people and generated annual sales of approximately 4.9 billion euros in 2022.
