The German Society for Materials Science (DGM) is delighted with and for one of its honorary members, Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Herbert Gleiter. Born in Stuttgart, he was recently named "Researcher of the Year 2020" by the International Association of Advanced Materials. In addition, Prof. Gleiter will be awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Lanzhou (China) in November this year.

The 82-year-old is one of the world's leading figures in the field of nanoscience. His numerous publications have been cited in over 23,000 papers. As a graduate of the Technical University of Stuttgart, Prof. Gleiter moved via stations in Germany and abroad to Saarland University in 1973, where he founded the Institute for New Materials in 1987 and from there moved to the then Karlsruhe Research Center (now part of KIT) as a board member in 1994, where he founded the "Institute for Nanotechnology" in 1998 and headed it until 2004. The "Herbert Gleiter Institute of Nanoscience" at the University of Nanjing (China), founded in 2012 and named after him, is manifest proof of his international reputation. In 2017, the Chinese Academy of Sciences appointed him founder and director of the "Herbert Gleiter International Laboratory" in Shenyang, which focuses on research and initial applications of nanostructured crystalline and amorphous materials and is breaking new ground in its organizational structure.

In the course of his scientific career, Prof. Gleiter has received over 40 awards, has been elected to over 10 National Academies of Science/Technology and has been awarded honorary doctorates at seven - soon to be eight - universities.

Professor Dr. Herbert Gleiter is deeply and firmly rooted in the German Society for Materials Science. He has been a personal DGM member for decades and was awarded the "Masing Prize" in 1971 and subsequently received the "Heyn Denkmünze" for his scientific work in 1998. So it was only right that this outstanding scientist was awarded honorary membership of the DGM in 2009.

The German Society for Materials Science congratulates Professor Dr. Herbert Gleiter on the title of "Researcher of the Year", an outstanding award for an outstanding expert in his field.
