Neue Materialien Bayreuth GmbH has developed an in-situ atomization process for the production of MMC powder for high-strength wear-resistant coatings. It is suitable for highly stressed components. The metal matrix composite (MMC) powders are extremely hard and are suitable for additive processing.

In order to achieve the highest possible hardness of the protective layer required for the agar technology application, the challenge during the three-year development period was to ensure a homogeneous distribution of the hard material particles embedded in a metallic matrix in the core of the powder grain and to guarantee controlled melting of the powder grain during additive processing. The MMC powder consists of a nickel- and iron-based matrix with ceramic hard material particles, including tungsten carbide (WC-Co) and fused tungsten carbide (WSC). It enables the production of a high-performance wear protection layer with properties tailored to the application. Such an innovative wear protection coating is used in agar and transportation technology, where components are exposed to extreme mechanical loads and abrasion. The developed material also offers promising possibilities for cutting tools due to its high wear and temperature resistance.
