Stricter PFAS limits in one year

In order to protect the population and the environment from perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), new EU regulations are gradually coming into force, which are also binding for Germany and include strict limits for drinking water.

In 2024, for example, the EU issued a regulation that sets the limit value for the sum of 20 specific PFAS in drinking water at 0.1 micrograms per liter (μg/L). This value will come into force on January 12, 2026. In addition, an even stricter limit value of 0.02 μg/L for the sum of four specific PFAS (PFHxS, PFOS, PFOA, PFNA) will be introduced from 2028. A less well-known topic is the emission of PFAS from wind turbines. The rotor blades of these turbines are often made of composite materials containing PFAS to increase their durability and weather resistance. New studies show that PFAS particles can be released into the environment through erosion and abrasion.
