No plastic at all: EWS European Welding Service GmbH is now focusing on greater sustainability for the packaging and storage of tungsten electrodes. In line with the introduction to its own product range, the torch specialist is offering the important accessories exclusively in paper-based packaging. A specially designed sleeve provides information about the contents with the common designations and color codes as well as the desired lengths and diameters. This is because EWS ships more than 100 different variants in this way. From a certain purchase quantity, EWS supplies the packaging with an individual label.
Every TIG welder needs them for the optimum welding process, and demand is correspondingly high: tungsten electrodes are one of the most important accessories for TIG welding. The manufacturer is now adding electrodes in various designs to the accessories portfolio of its TIG torch brand TIGZONE. Reason enough to take responsibility for the launch: "The sale of tungsten electrodes is an important mass market. The fact that we still have no other packaging solution in the industry than plastic was a thorn in our side," says EWS Managing Director Jan van der Hammen. "By switching to paper, we are creating a sustainable and high-quality alternative that helps us to achieve a greater sense of responsibility in the industry."
More than 100 variants sustainably packaged
EWS ships all available tungsten electrodes in packs of ten. From simple WP electrodes to electrodes with thorium dioxide content, the stock currently includes more than 100 article variants - in various lengths and diameters. The packaging can be opened with a simple folding mechanism. The electrodes are firmly inserted in a small corrugated cardboard box. This means that no part can slip during transportation or use.
The packaging not only creates greater sustainability, but also provides additional added value for welders thanks to clear product information. The composition, length and diameter can be marked individually. This makes it clear at a glance whether the electrode is suitable for the specific TIG application. There is another reason for the deliberately minimalist design: EWS labels the packaging with the customer's individual logo when a corresponding quantity is purchased.
A measure as part of the sustainability strategy
With the new packaging for the tungsten electrodes, EWS is continuing to put its own sustainability claim into practice. And this is not the only measure: the company is gradually converting numerous torch packagings to paper. The site in Goch also runs on solar power. EWS breathes new life into used burners with an expert repair service.
