FestBatt: The next step for the solid-state battery

Greater safety, larger storage capacities, shorter charging times - solid-state batteries are set to outperform conventional lithium-ion batteries in almost all performance parameters in the future.

The FestBatt battery competence cluster, with the participation of researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), has developed the basis for this. In a second funding phase, complete battery systems and methods for production are now being developed.

Among other things, a research group at KIT will make the cathode materials provided with special protective coatings available to the partners within the platform and then as a reference material to all other joint projects involved in FestBatt for complete characterization. In addition to the already established combination of the sol-gel method with the spray-drying process, a new method is available for coating the active materials, in which thin, homogeneous layers of a wide variety of coating materials can be created by chemically activating the surface with H2O2. The new method is characterized by a more homogeneous coating.
