Machining hardened steel

Machining hardened steel

In tool and mold making, the machining of hardened steels above 50 HRC is standard. The materials are both hard and tough, and alloy components that increase corrosion resistance make machining tasks more difficult.

The milling cutters used are subject to very heavy wear. Long and, above all, reliable tool life is only possible with a coating that is adapted to the tool. With the new HiPIMS coating material SteelCon®, CemeCon offers the best solution for this.

SteelCon® is the second silicon-doped HiPIMS coating material from CemeCon. While InoxaCon® is ideal for machining stainless steel, titanium and difficult-to-machine materials, SteelCon® was developed specifically for machining hardened steels above 50 HRC.

Due to its high hardness and toughness, coupled with excellent adhesion, the coating material is highly wear-resistant, has a dense layer structure and increased thermal stability. As no droplets can form thanks to the HiPIMS process, it is also extremely smooth. This means that nothing stands in the way of optimum chip and heat removal. The tool can dissipate the heat in the chip, increasing process stability. Excellent surface finishes are achieved, so that the user can often save on subsequent work, sometimes even polishing their workpieces. Shorter machining times, reduced set-up and handling processes and better surface quality significantly reduce costs.
