Lightweight battery systems

Lightweight battery systems

The EU project ALBATROSS (project duration: 01.01.2021-31.12.2024) addresses the needs of the European market for electric and hybrid electric cars. It aims to reduce public concerns about the range and cost of car batteries, their long-term reliability and long charging times.

ALBATROSS relies on an integrated approach based on intelligent batteries in combination with lightweight constructions. By using innovative cooling technologies, the partners aim to achieve a charging temperature range of 5-40 °C (30-40 °C for ultra-fast charging) - with a fluctuation of < 3 °C between the battery cells and an optimum operating temperature of 20-23 °C. The lightweight solutions, which are based on modular multi-material systems for battery modules and carriers, are manufactured and joined using state-of-the-art, fast and cost-effective processes. The disassembly, recycling and reuse of the batteries are planned as part of an eco-design approach.

The Fraunhofer IWS participates by developing innovative laser-based joining technologies and design concepts for lightweight cell connections and aluminum battery trays. With the aim of increasing the thermal and electrical conductivity of cell and battery components, surface structuring processes are also being developed using the laser interference structuring approach.
