The use of sustainable biofuels led to record greenhouse gas savings in 2020. At more than 13.2 million tons, almost 4 million tons moreCO2 emissions were avoided in 2020 than a year earlier. According to the German Bioenergy Association (BBE), this is a success that can be attributed to the increase in the greenhouse gas reduction quota (GHG quota) from 4% to 6% in 2020.
Biofuels at the filling station or in commercial vehicle fleets have a price-dampening effect in line with their blending ratio andCO2 pricing, according to the association. This is because the renewable fuel components in petrol and diesel are exempt fromCO2 pricing in accordance with the national emissions trading scheme for transport that has been in force since the beginning of 2021. As the vehicle population is expected to still comprise around 30 million vehicles with combustion engines in 2030, combustion engines should be further developed using sustainably produced and greenhouse gas-optimized biofuels. According to the BBE, the development and market launch of further alternative fuels and the inclusion of sustainable biofuels in the fleet limits are also necessary. There is also a call to increase the proportion of renewable blends in petrol and diesel.
