Solid-state battery ready for series production - Gigafactory in planning

The German start-up High Performance Battery (HPB) presents the first solid-state battery ready for series production. Galvanotechnik had already reported on the battery innovation in Galvanotechnik 5/2022 from p. 694.

  • The HPB solid-state battery outperforms conventional lithium-ion batteries in several respects:
  • In terms of service life, which is 50000 charge cycles instead of 1250 charge cycles as with lithium-ion batteries.
  • In terms of safety, because HPB solid-state batteries are not flammable like conventional batteries with liquid electrolytes.
  • In terms of sustainability, thanks to a 50 % improvement in environmental performance
  • and finally also in terms of conductivity, because HPB solid-state batteries have improved conductivity, even at extreme temperatures, which makes pre-heating in winter unnecessary.

Applications range from stationary storage systems for the home and industrial sector to charging infrastructures and the mobility segment - such as the automotive industry. The longevity of the HPB battery improves the cost-effectiveness of battery storage systems, while the longer service life reduces the consumption of raw materials and makes it possible to dispense with controversial materials such as cobalt. HPB plans to distribute its technology worldwide via a licensing model and is already in contact with potential licensees, including interested parties from India. A gigafactory in eastern Switzerland is being planned.
