Code of practice DWA-M 285-2 for trace substances

The leaflet DWA-M 285-2 is intended to serve as a practice-oriented, well-founded working aid for the planning of activated carbon processes.

The information sheet DWA-M 285-2 summarizes previous findings on the dimensioning and design of activated carbon processes for the targeted removal of trace substances and describes the effects of the processes on the operation of the wastewater treatment plant.

Only processes that are already in operation at several wastewater treatment plants or for which there is already sufficient experience from several large-scale studies to be implemented permanently at a wastewater treatment plant are included. Taking into account the design information, it is possible to remove a high percentage of highly to readily adsorbable substances from wastewater at an economically justifiable cost using the activated carbon processes presented.

Experts currently consider the use of activated carbon as well as the use of ozone or a combination of both operating media to be an option for wastewater treatment plants in order to remove dissolved organic trace substances from wastewater.

Against this background, the DWA has started to develop a new series of information sheets DWA-M 285 "Trace substance removal in municipal wastewater treatment plants".
