Offenbach is the most energy-efficient city in Germany. The Hessian city takes first place in the ranking of the Federal Association for Energy-Efficient Building Envelopes (BuVEG) with regard to the building stock in Germany. The study is based on more than 450,000 listings on the Immobilienscout24 platform between September 2020 and 2021 on behalf of the BuVEG.
The five cities with the most energy-efficient building stock are Offenbach, Ingolstadt, Schwerin, Cottbus and Frankfurt am Main.
In contrast, the five cities with the worst energy-efficient building stock are Wuppertal, Herne, Gelsenkirchen, Kassel, Krefeld and Mönchengladbach. The ranking is based on the median energy consumption values (kWh/m2) of the buildings in the cities.
Two major anomalies can be identified: In the top ranks (1-20) are twelve cities from the new federal states; considerably more refurbishment and construction has taken place here since reunification. Secondly: 13 cities from North Rhine-Westphalia are represented at the bottom of the rankings (35-50), which can be explained by a well-known backlog of refurbishment work on the building stock there.
