How high are the company's vehicle-relatedCO2 emissions? Every boss should know this key figure. After all, company mobility not only has an impact on the environment and operating costs, but is also increasingly becoming an aspect of employer attractiveness in times of a shortage of skilled workers.
20% ofCO2 emissions in Germany are attributable to the transport sector. That is around 157 million tons of carbon dioxide per year. 60% of this is caused by car traffic, which also includes commuting to work and journeys in company cars.
According to the Paris Climate Agreement, every citizen of the world is entitled to annualCO2 emissions of around 2.4 tons. It is to be expected that the costs of unsustainable mobility in companies will increase significantly, for example throughCO2 pricing and possibly through new tax framework conditions, e.g. through the reduction of climate-damaging subsidies. As a result, vehicles with combustion engines will become increasingly uneconomical for companies and consequently less attractive.
The following guidelines and behavior help to save money: Unnecessary travel is avoided. At the same time, as many journeys as possible should be made by train. To this end, employees receive a BahnCard 50 and monetary incentives. Employees who are entitled to a company car but choose not to use it receive a BahnCard 100, 1st class, which can also be used for private rail travel, as well as half of the costs saved on the reference vehicle.
Air travel is only permitted in exceptional cases. The company offsets the emissions from these trips. Journeys to and from work should be made by bicycle; the company can provide its employees with bicycles for this purpose.
According to a study by the Königssteiner Group, which surveyed more than 3,000 employees from various sectors across Germany in April 2020, almost two-thirds of German employees consider their employer's stance on climate issues to be important, a particular incentive to apply to this company. For more than half of employees, a strong stance on climate protection and sustainability is one of the top 3 incentives when looking for an employer.
