"BigMack with added value"

Peter Mack Owner and Managing Director of Sager+Mack GmbH
Interview: Heinz Käsinger

Galvanotechnik: Some people in our industry are said to call you BigMack. Is that true - and if so, how come?

Peter Mack: The fact is this: Our range of filter devices includes quick-change, cartridge, plate, bag, high-flow and adsorber filters in various sizes. We call the largest one the BigMack. So it's possible that this name has rubbed off on people.

You say about your pumps and filters that they have added value. How is that to be understood?

They actually have an additional component that is unique on the market, a bearing shield that provides a fluid reservoir in the pump and thus leads to an emergency running property, a short-term dry-running protection. Instead of the usual support bearings in the suction side of the pump, special bearings are used which also run in the protected part of the pump housing. This increases reliability and service life.

In addition, the devices are suitable for all available filter media. The filter housings can be installed with the pumps individually and modularly to form filter stations. The customer determines the desired result and we design the details.

The industry notes that you got through the coronavirus crisis relatively well. How did you overcome it?

We are doing very well with forward-looking, strategic planning. All processes are being rethought and optimized to make operations more sustainable, efficient and therefore crisis-proof.

In addition, we have a high level of vertical integration, which has already proven its worth in the past. From the solid material to the finished product, everything is designed and produced at the company headquarters in Eckartshausen, and does full justice to the "Made in Germany" label. The all-encompassing, new German keyword these days is, of course, lean production.

What are the advantages of this company policy for the customer?

Primarily in the reliable supply, the high quality of the components thanks to in-house quality controls and the direct influence on costs. In addition, the company can produce just-in-time and work on customer-specific solutions.

Sager + Mack GmbH has now been developing continuously for more than 30 years. How will it continue?

The fact that our daughter Nina Mack has joined the company is certainly a sign of continuity. After graduating from high school, she completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk with an additional qualification in international business management at an international company. She then studied General Management at accadis University of Applied Sciences Bad Homburg, where she successfully completed her Bachelor's degree. During her studies, she spent a semester at the Ocean University of China and completed a six-month internship at a leading international industrial company in the laser sector. She therefore brings with her many ideas from outside the company, from which the company is now benefiting.

And in your private life you like Unimogs.

Yes, I am indeed a big Unimog fan. I first became interested in them as a child, when the only snow shovel in the village was a Unimog, which I watched with wide-eyed wonder. Over the years, this developed into a great passion. These vehicles are still made from durable and high-quality components. The technology and construction are so robust that they still fulfill their purpose decades later and still look good. So it is only natural that our show car, called UNIMack, is also of this type of vehicle. It can be seen at events both inside and outside the industry. A sponsorship model allows you to become a partner of the UNIMack and thus promote its presence on the market.
