Electricity market shares 2020: wind energy supplies over a third of German electricity

Renewable energies hit the ground running in 2020. The wind energy sector in particular stands out after the first four months: according to data from Fraunhofer ISE, German wind turbines have fed 61.5 TWh of clean electricity into the grid so far (as of May 6, 2020, 8:15 a.m.). This corresponds to 34.9 percent of net electricity generation for 2020 to date, with a good sixth of wind power generation coming from the offshore sector. Overall, renewable energies have achieved a total share of 56% of the electricity mix for the year to date.

Hermann Albers, President of the German Wind Energy Association, was delighted with the performance of the wind energy sector: "More than a third of the electricity generated in Germany and fed into the public grid comes from onshore and offshore wind turbines. This continues the positive trend in the wind energy sector from 2019. For our industry, this is an incentive and motivation to continue supplying the majority of renewable electricity for Germany in the future." The latest Global Energy Review by the International Energy Agency (IEA) also sees renewable energies on the rise worldwide - due to low operating costs and preferential access to many power supply systems.

"The high feed-in of renewable energies is accompanied by a slight decline in electricity consumption due to coronavirus. Nevertheless, system security is guaranteed at all times. The high forecasting reliability of wind energy combined with the optimal operation of individual turbines and entire parks make it possible to control the load flows in the grid in a very orderly manner. This makes the wind energy sector an anchor of stability for sustainable electricity generation in Germany. We are delivering safely in the current crisis and want to make our contribution to the economic restart in Germany once the exceptional situation is over. We hope that, despite the current challenges, politicians will not lose sight of the important decisions for the electricity market, the expansion of renewables and setting the course for a CO2-free energy industry across all sectors. To this end, the joint processing of the 18-point plan of the Federal Ministry of Economics must now be completed quickly," said Albers.
