Environmentally friendly non-stick coating replaces PFAS chemicals

Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (c) have been used for years in a wide variety of everyday products and coating processes. Due to known risks for humans and the environment, an at least partial ban on the production and use of PFAS is expected in the near future.

Mit der fluorfreien PLASLON®-Technologie beschichtete Pfannenmuster (Fraunhofer IFAM)Pan samples coated with fluorine-free PLASLON® technology (Fraunhofer IFAM)

Fraunhofer IFAM has developed a PFAS-free non-stick coating using Plaslon technology. This is not only fluorine-free (Zero-F), but also free of additives and can be applied to almost all materials, including hard ceramic surfaces. It is designed as a gradient layer to enable excellent adhesion to the product body on the one hand and to develop optimum non-stick properties on the other. The layer is also characterized by good easy-to-clean properties and is resistant to cutting and abrasion, non-porous and food-safe, and exhibits oleophilic behavior with regard to edible oils and fats.

The Fraunhofer IFAM has the know-how and manufacturing processes to economically process products in large quantities, e.g. in XXL or continuous lines.
