H2Giga, one of the three hydrogen flagship projects funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), was launched at the end of August 2021. With over 130 participating institutions from industry and science, organized in almost 30 independently operating consortia, the funded project will develop the production of green hydrogen on an industrial scale.
AiF member DECHEMA Gesellschaft für Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie e.V. is coordinating the exchange between the partners from science and industry in the lead project. The aim of H2Giga is to bring electrolysers into series production and thus enable the competitive production of green hydrogen on a gigawatt scale. A total funding amount of around 500 million euros has been earmarked for these activities. Green hydrogen can be used to convert renewable electrical energy into chemical energy and thus make it storable. Storage, in turn, is an essential prerequisite for converting Germany's energy industry to renewable sources.
