Bavaria's Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy Hubert Aiwanger has described the federal government's funding of the Straubing-based "Synergy Fuels" project as a "huge success for the Free State". 13 million euros in funding for research into synthetic fuels and advanced biofuels is thus flowing to Lower Bavaria. The Minister of State expressed his astonishment at the chaos of competence within the Berlin traffic light government.
"The Federal Minister of Transport is promoting research into biofuels and synthetic fuels, while the Federal Environment Minister is presenting plans to abolish biofuels. In this Berlin chaos, one hand doesn't know what the other is doing." Aiwanger: "The aim is to create synergies between e-fuels and biofuels. For me, this is a decisive lever for a successful energy transition in the transport sector. This brings us closer to my goal of making the production of synthetic fuels in Bavaria cheaper and more competitive." The lighthouse project "Synergies through the integration of biomass use and Power-to-X in the production of renewable fuels (Synergy Fuels)" aims to create synergies through the integration of biomass use and Power-to-X in the production of renewable fuels. An integrated refinery concept is to be developed and demonstrated on a pilot plant scale, focusing on maximum energy and raw material efficiency for the production of renewable fuels. The aim is to achieve a level of technological maturity that best prepares the transfer to industrial application.
With "Synergy Fuels", a research focus for renewable fuels is being established in Straubing. The funded project will run for four years. Participants include the Chair of Biotechnology and Sustainability and the Green Fuel Centers of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). The Technology and Support Center (TFZ), the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology (UMSICHT), the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology (IGB) and the industrial companies Clariant, Martech and Volkswagen are also represented. The work in "Synergy Fuels" makes an important contribution to the research center for renewable fuels that is currently being established at the Straubing site.
