More geothermal energy secures 400,000 jobs

According to the Federal Association of the German Heating Industry (BDH), a total of 9775 geothermal heat pump systems were installed last year. This is still far too few given that a total of 338,785 heat generators were sold in 2019, of which 286,677 were fossil fuel heating systems using natural gas or oil.

In the first half of 2020, more than 210,000 applications for funding were submitted for funding programs including commercial and municipal buildings - an increase of around 165% compared to 2019.

One reason for the sharp rise in the number of applications is the significant program improvements made at the beginning of the year, with which the German government implemented the resolutions of the Climate Cabinet. The more attractive funding conditions continue to pay off, as a look at the programs for energy-efficient construction and renovation (EBS programs) shows. These investments avoidCO2 emissions of over 400,000 tons and secure more than 400,000 jobs. The total investment volume in the first half of 2020 amounted to around 38.5 billion euros.

Continued high demand is also evident in the amended market incentive program for heat from renewable energies, which is being implemented under the name "Heating with Renewable Energies" at the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA). Around 110,000 applications for funding were received in the first half of 2020.
