On the initiative of a group of countries with the support of the German Physical Society (DPG), the American Physical Society, the International Society for Optics and Photonics, the Chinese Optical Society and Optica, the UN General Conference proclaimed 2025 as the "International Year of Quantum Science and Technology". This year-long global initiative aims to recognize the groundbreaking contributions of quantum science to technological progress over the past 100 years, raise global awareness of its importance for sustainable development in the 21st century and ensure that all nations have access to education in the field of quantum physics. In Germany, the DPG is coordinating the activities of the Quantum Year 2025. Under the motto "Quantum2025 - 100 years are just the beginning", the findings and perspectives of quantum physics are to be made visible both within the scientific community and to the general public.

There will be a comprehensive annual program for a broad target group, divided into five thematic areas: Focusing on quantum in research, quantum playfully and in school, quantum in music, philosophy, art and literature as well as quantum in the professional world and on the historical path to the modern quantum world. In addition, quantum mechanics will be highlighted in the various areas of life. The planned activities will be framed by an overarching program. The opening of the quantum year took place on January 14, 2025 in Berlin. Another highlight will be the DPG Autumn Conference with a public supporting program, which is planned in Göttingen from 8 to 12 September 2025.
