Storage capacities increased by 50 % in 2024

The capacity of stationary battery storage systems in Germany continues to grow. According to a preliminary annual balance sheet from the German Solar Industry Association, almost 600,000 new battery storage systems were commissioned in 2024. This includes home, commercial and large-scale storage systems. Both the number and the capacity of all solar storage systems installed in Germany thus increased by almost 50 % within one year. According to the association's projections based on data from the Federal Network Agency, a total of more than 1.8 million storage systems with a capacity of around 19 gigawatt hours (GWh) were installed at the turn of the year. This is enough to store the average daily private electricity consumption of more than two million two-person households in Germany. "Combining photovoltaic systems on your own roof with storage systems is now inexpensive and has become standard. Intelligent storage operation not only saves electricity costs for operators, but also relieves the burden on the grids and reduces the costs of the energy transition," says Carsten Körnig, Managing Director of the German Solar Industry Association. In this context, he welcomes the agreement recently reached in the Bundestag between the SPD, the Greens and the CDU/CSU parliamentary group to remove market barriers to more flexible storage use. According to the solar and storage industry association, it is also encouraging that, in addition to home storage systems, more and more commercial storage systems and large-scale storage systems in the megawatt class are being installed. In 2024, twice as much large-scale storage capacity was newly installed as in the previous year. The expansion of large-scale storage systems is expected to gain significant momentum in the coming years.
