The 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) BMI323 from Bosch Sensortec combines precise acceleration and rotation rate measurement (gyroscopic) with intelligent motion-triggering interrupt functions. The new IMU consists of a triaxial 16-bit gyroscope, a triaxial accelerometer and temperature sensor on one chip. BMI323 provides fast and accurate inertial measurement in all applications.
The self-calibrating gyroscope uses a motionless CRT (re-trimming) functionality to compensate for MEMS-typical soldering deviations and reduce sensitivity errors to ± 0.7% after soldering. The integrated gesture and activity recognition with integrated plug-and-play pedometer/detector is optimized for accurate step counting in wrist-worn devices. The IMU is also suitable for other wearable devices such as hearables or fitness trackers.
The sensor has very wide supply voltage ranges - 1.71 to 3.63 V (VDD) and 1.08 to 3.63 V (VDDIO). Performance and current consumption (790 µA current consumption in high power mode, A+G) are stable over the entire voltage supply range. The BMI323 offers I2C, I3C and digital SPI interfaces. The bandwidths are programmable (accelerometer: 6.2 to 1.677 Hz, gyroscope: 6.2 to 563 Hz. The 2 kB FIFO buffer provides synchronized data and supports functions for always-on applications: Motion detection, step detector, plug-and-play pedometer. The BMI323 inertial measurement unit is offered in a miniature LGA with dimensions of 2.5 x 3.0 x 0.83 mm.
The following applies to the temperature coefficient TCO: accelerometer ± 0.3 mg/K, gyroscope ± 0.04°/s/K. The operating temperature range is from -40 to +85 °C. The device is downward compatible (pin-to-pin) with the BMI160 and BMI270 IMUs. Target applications are notebooks and tablets, smartwatches and fitness devices, game controllers and remote controls, toys and gadgets, smart IoT devices.
