Dissertation on 'electro-mechanical energy harvesting systems' honored

Young scientist Lukas Lentz received the Manfred Hirschvogel Prize 2019 for his dissertation at the Department of Mechatronic Machine Dynamics at TU Berlin. The €5,000 prize is awarded by the foundation of the same name, which honors the best doctorate in the field of mechanical engineering at all TU9 Universities each year.
The Dr.-Ing., who received his doctorate with summa cum laude in 2018, worked on so-called 'electro-mechanical energy harvesting systems'. These are used to generate electrical energy from the vibrations of machines or structures. In order to maximize the amount of energy obtained, it is crucial that the energy harvesting system is optimally adapted to the vibrations that occur, whereby the use of models and simulation methods that are as accurate as possible play a decisive role. This is where Lentz came in, investigating a selection of simulation methods and improving the modeling currently in use.
After completing his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering design technology at Beuth University of Applied Sciences, Lentz studied for a master's degree in physical engineering at TU Berlin from 2009. His Master's degree in 2013 was followed by a doctorate. He is currently working on his habilitation as a research assistant at the Institute of Mechanics at TU Berlin.
