BASF is one of the world's largest producers of amines. And amines are important in electroplating: as additives in electrolyte solutions in which they are used as brighteners or levelers in copper, nickel or tin baths, for example to influence the surface roughness, surface reflection or the crystal structure of the metal layer.

The Intermediates division is now converting its entire European amine portfolio to 100% renewable electricity. The switch began in May 2025 and applies to all amines produced at the European production sites in Ludwigshafen and Antwerp, Belgium. From 2025, the switch is expected to lead to an annual reduction of around 188,000 tonsof CO2 equivalents compared to the base year 2020. This corresponds to an average reduction in the product carbon footprint (PCF) of around 8% across the entire Amine portfolio. The transition is thus an important milestone in BASF's efforts to contribute to its sustainability goal of reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 25% by 2030 compared to 2018. Customers will benefit from a reduction in their Scope 3 emissions and a seamless transition to the new standard portfolio.
