To optimize the pre-cooling of hydrogen at hydrogen filling stations, Alfa Laval has developed the HyBloc diffusion-welded heat exchanger. HyBloc enables fast, safe refueling of all types of hydrogen vehicles such as cars, trucks, buses and other heavy-duty vehicles. The pre-coolers are compact, modular and scalable and can be easily integrated into existing pumping systems for a simple technology change.
The HyBloc's exceptional performance results from its high allowable operating pressure, which enables rapid filling of the vehicle tank, and its high pre-cooling capacity, which minimizes waiting times between refuelling.
The use of robust, diffusion-welded heat exchanger plates ensures high pressure resistance up to 1,250 bar and operating temperatures down to -70 °C. This makes HyBloc a high-performance component for current H70 systems operating at 700 bar and also meets future requirements. In contrast to conventional plate-and-shell heat exchangers, HyBloc responds immediately to load requirements, so that no waiting time is required after a refueling process to cool the next hydrogen filling quantity. The combination of a compact design, fast response to thermal load requirements and a continuously operating cooling circuit therefore enables refueling in direct succession.
Space-saving solution for hydrogen cooling
The pre-coolers are up to 85% smaller than plate-and-shell heat exchangers with comparable cooling capacity and can be easily integrated into a dispenser. There is no need for costly, time-consuming underground installation, making the units ideal for use in urban areas and other environments where space is at a premium. The HyBloc range comprises four standard models that cover all common requirements. Special designs including individual specifications for cooling media and capacity are also possible.
