DGO District Group Thuringia - Surface Technology and Electromobility

In November 2023, Rainer Venz, MacDermid Alpha Electronics Solutions, reported on the influence of material, surface and process selection on the reliability of electronic components at the November DGO event organized by the Thuringia district group.

His presentation focused on future developments in the automotive market, comparing combustion and battery-powered vehicles. The prospects for the rapid implementation of electromobility by automotive companies by 2030 were presented in platforms. Vehicles with self-driving systems (autonomous driving) are still in the development and test phase. The global trend is towards greater reliability despite the increasing miniaturization of electronic components, greater vehicle range thanks to powerful batteries and robust electronics. This also places high demands on surface technology for well-known German manufacturers to ensure that electronic components are resistant to moisture, temperature fluctuations, vibrations and overheating. Examples of coating variants with materials such as nano silver, silicon carbide and special alloys were presented. This means that coating companies must also adapt to suitable materials and coating combinations for electronic components, printed circuit boards and connectors.
