The research institute Edelmetalle + Metallchemie fem is part of the Hy-Five research and development initiative to establish a model region for green hydrogen in Baden-Württemberg. The Deputy Director of fem, Prof. Dr. Holger Kaßner, accepted the award at a kick-off event in Schwäbisch Gmünd on July 4 from Baden-Württemberg's State Secretary Dr. Andre Baumann on behalf of the institute, which conducts research in the fields of materials science and surface technology in particular.
With a budget of around 50 million euros, Hy-Five includes four lighthouse projects and 19 project partners. The aim of the project is to develop and operate a comprehensive ecosystem for green hydrogen. An integrated network of electrolyzer plants, filling stations and pipelines will be established, the use of hydrogen in heavy goods vehicles will be tested and hydrogen technology will be further advanced in application-oriented R&D projects. The fem will further intensify its activities in the field of hydrogen technology by building a unique cluster plant as part of the H₂-Aspen lighthouse project of the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd. The facility will make it possible to develop innovative materials and surfaces for fuel cells and electrolysis in direct cooperation with SMEs and industry.
