The Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST and Feng Chia University (FCU) from Taiwan are cooperating on surface and production technology for optical and electrical systems. "The close cooperation with Feng Chia University creates an important interface for the expansion of mutual exchange between our two innovation areas and markets for mutual benefit," said Holger Hanselka, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
The aim of the research on the new so-called "Fraunhofer Innovation Platform" is to develop optical and electrical systems for which there is a broad application potential and a great demand, also among Taiwanese companies. Among other things, expertise in plasma surface technology is being pooled for this purpose. The aim is to develop solutions for sustainable production systems for high-precision coatings. Simulation and modeling as well as process monitoring, control and automation, taking into account human-computer interaction, also play an important role. The range of services for industry is supplemented by a comprehensive range of further training courses in the field of surface technology and production. With the so-called "Enhanced Optical Sputtering System EOSS", the Fraunhofer IST has an innovative production platform for the manufacture of precision optical filters. In conjunction with the MOCCA+ software for process monitoring and control, also developed at the IST, this system can produce highly complex filters with hundreds of layers.
The cooperation with the Production Automation Laboratory at Feng Chia University, which has special expertise in the field of artificial intelligence and intelligent manufacturing systems, opens up new opportunities to significantly improve the performance of the EOSS through the integration of AI and to open up further markets.
